reasons to maintain a blog for photography business

It tends to boggle my mind how photographers skip over blogging. As a photographer, you have a lot of things to do. That is such a valid reason, but when you want to connect with more aligned clients on a consistent basis, NOT blogging is what is holding you back.

When you think about it, it just makes sense.

GOOGLE

showing up - reasons to maintain your blog for photography business

In all likeliness, your website does NOT show up when someone searches for photographers in your area or niche.

When it comes to marketing, I know that social media is all the craze. But honestly, it isn’t the perfect fit for all business types. ESPECIALLY for photographers.

Think about it. If you wanted to hire an electrician, you wouldn’t sit around and hope to stumble upon one on your for you page. You probably wouldn’t begin your search on the Instagram search page. You would google it. If you needed to hire a wedding planner or a caterer, you are probably going to google it.

Maintaining a blog is what will help your website show up in those searches related to what you do (as long as you are using keywords and optimize the blog post: more on that later). It expands your website’s. Each blog is a essentially a new page of your website. It is a new opportunity for you to show up in a search.

You don’t have any chance of getting leads if your website doesn’t even show up. The process can take a long time, I always tell my clients to give it at least a year before you will really start seeing it consistently work for you.

But, if you give it the chance (the time and energy and effort), you will start getting clicks on your site and even people booking. I have a client who (after about 1 1/2 of blogging) gets booked weekly from people that found her site on google. Some even driving from 3+ hours away just to do a shoot with her.

MARKETING

release pressure of social media - reasons to maintain your blog for photography business

Everyone has something to say about social media marketing. How to use the right hook, the hacks for how to make a reel do well, carousels and calls to action. There is so much information and it all makes it feel like you can’t really get it right no matter how hard you try.

It can feel as though if you don’t post every day or every week or whatever, you are a failure and your business is doomed.

Blogging eliminates that. There is no pressure. You can use social media to have fun, to connect with your audience as intended. You don’t have to be perfect on social media, because you are getting your leads and bookings from your website.

ALIGNED CLIENTS

Blogging works better than social media for connecting with the right people, it just does. On social media you are fighting through all of this noise, getting pushed out to everyone—whether they are looking for you or not.

Getting your website to show up on Google means that your site is going to be shown specifically to people that are looking for you, for someone that does what you do.

The difference between getting hired by just anyone and someone that is aligned with you can be huge. Everything feels so much brighter. Working with the kind of people that just get you can make your whole life feel better, it just hits different. Feeling like you are doing what you are meant to do is like no other feeling.

And sometimes, the difference is what you do to connect with them. Showing up where they are bridges the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

security and longevity - reasons to maintain your blog for photography business

Social media posts kind of have the shelf life of an avocado.

That tends to mean that the post you spent forever creating will only be shown to people for a very limited time.

Blogs on the other hand, only get more effective with time. They have a shelf life more akin to a jar of pickles.

The more people choose to click on your post, the better the post will do. You don’t have to put in loads of effort every single day. The work you have already put in can continue to work for you as time moves on, rather than just sitting there rotting.

blogging for photography business

There are endless reasons why blogging for your photography business is beneficial. I could drone on and on.

I love getting to write blogs on behalf of my photographer clients, highlighting their brand voice, creating posts they don’t have the time or expertise to do for themselves. Read more on my blog marketing for photographers service or my guides for DIYing it like the pros.
