7 Blog Post Ideas for Freelance Designers

I know better than anyone that it can be so much more difficult to work on your own business than it is to deliver for your clients. Writing a blog might be the last thing on your radar. I know that it takes SO much to do what you do. I admire you. I went to school for graphic design and I know the amount of drive, passion, and talent it takes to do your job.

Especially as a freelancer, you have quite a lot on your plate. You have to manage client communication, your own time, all of the projects you have in progress at one time, your social media, other marketing methods, billing, and all the other aspects of running a business. It is quite a lot.

Let me tell you, keeping up with a blog, even if it is once a month or once every two months, can only strengthen your brand. It brings a level of credibility that can not be made up for with any amount of social media presence, strong design, or beautiful graphics. Whether you are new to blogging or a seasoned pro, here are a few post ideas to keep you going.

Show client work in a blog post

Your future clients want to know what they will be getting from you. They want to see your range. Give them access to a portfolio at their whim. It will not only help the people who are already considering you, but it will make it easier for people to find you as well. These posts are a win-win. You can also highlight your client’s testimonials. Share the praise that your past clients have given you and give your future clients the confidence that hiring you is the right decision for them and their business.

Write a blog post about color theory

You can use your blog to show off all of that knowledge that you have stored up in that noggin of yours. You can also use a post like this to direct to anyone that has questions. It is okay if this information is already on the internet, you can show YOUR audience that you are knowledgable and add another layer to the candy bar of your credibility. I know you are talented, you know that you are talented, but anyone off the street does not know that about you yet. Talk about the parts of color theory that you tend to use and why.

Talk about a design principle on your design blog

This is the same idea as talking about color theory. You spent your time, money, and effort to learn about all of those things. You learned about the psychology behind certain design choices, tell your audience about it. Talk about movement and unity, and why these things are important for each design. Talk about hierarchy and white space and why you are the right one to use them effectively for your reader’s needs.

Blog about the Top 3…

People love lists.

Keep it short—usually 3, 5, or 7 works best. Never longer than 10. People don’t have a long enough attention span. You could do lists of ANYTHING. Design trends, things you include in a branding package, your secrets to client communications, why you can’t “just do a logo”, any kind of list that would be helpful to your audience works perfect.

Write a post explaining the process of a project from inquiry to sending off the final files

Show the step by step process, from mood board, to thumbnails, to sketches, to digitization, this is why your time has so much value. Talk about why you became a designer in your blog post

Every small business owner wants to know that the people they hire are personable and passionate. They want to know that you have a reason behind what you do. Give them easy access to you and your “why”.

Blog about your favorite design trends, fonts, colors, etc.

Design trends come and go. Talking about the trends that you like can be common ground between you and a potential client. Maybe they LOVE the trends that you like. Boom, there is reason one why they will hire you. No one will know about what you do or what you like if you don’t post about it. They can’t read your mind.

Use your blog to showcase your work, give potential clients access to your mind, and show the value of your design and time.
